Session description:
The internal terrain reflects itself in the external terrain in a myriad of ways that may well explain many breastfeeding problems. Gut health and integrity drives the nature of the enteric nervous system, thus the implications for well-being are significant. When the maternal body’s reaction to imbalance results in a pro-inflammatory response, a cascade of disease processes may result. Maternal health and well-being, post-partum depression, food allergies, milk supply, PCOS, tongue-tie, reflux, "high-need" infant behavior, slow growth, failure to thrive and numerous feeding difficulties may all find origins in the integrity and vitality of the mother’s internal terrain. In attending to the health of the maternal gut, while supporting the infant in his own healing, we may find that many breastfeeding problems are resolved both acutely and chronically. In a discussion of maternal gut health, the function of the enteric nervous system and the implications for infant gut integrity, we will come to a deeper understanding of why healing the mother's gut may well be integral to successfully addressing a wide array of breastfeeding difficulties.

Tongue Posture: An Evolutionary Perspective, Kevin Boyd, DDS
Abstract:
Archaeological evidence indicates that modern-day humans (Homo sapiens) have been in their present anatomic form (Anatomically Modern Human-AMH) for at least 200,000 + years. Observations from pre-historic skeletal and fossil records reveal that H. sapiens has walked the planet for nearly their entire existence with well-aligned teeth and jaws. Even though soft tissues don’t get preserved within the fossil record, anthropologists can nonetheless, with a reasonable degree of scientific certainty, still infer brain sizes from the cranial volumes of fossilized skulls. So, given that the resting tongue should occupy the palatal vault in much the same manner as how the brain occupies the cranial vault, and, that well-aligned jaws and teeth are a symptom of healthy rest oral posture, it can also be inferred with a similar degree of certainty that AMH’s lived with well-postured tongues for hundreds of thousands of years.

In spite of the fact anthropologists have long reported that human craniofacial volume has been diminishing since the advent of agriculture in the Middle East some 10-12,000 years ago, there is no evidence to suggest that the currently prevalent narrowing of jaws and facial bones, with associated crowding and misalignment of teeth (malocclusion), appeared appreciably in humans until around the early/mid-17th Century. Since the early/mid-18th-Century malocclusion prevalence appears to have greatly increased and accelerated in Western Europe. Furthermore, consistent with these observations, there is very little evidence of malocclusion in contemporary indigenous societies that have little or no exposure to modern Western dietary habits.
A connection appears to exist between the prevalence of malocclusion and dietary feeding behaviors, especially during the first years of life. An ancestral pattern of infant and early childhood feeding (IECF), is typically characterized by exclusive and on-demand breast-feeding for at least 6 months, followed by continued on-demand breast-feeding and weaning (with fresh and minimally-processed foods) period into the 3rd year of life; evidence supports that this is the pattern practiced by AMH’s since their first appearance in the fossil record. The combined efforts of being suckled with breastmilk and chewing firmly textured weaning foods appears to provide protection against human malocclusion. Conversely, Modern IECF regimens typically comprised of cow milk-based commercial infant formulas and weaning with highly processed pureed baby foods, seem to be associated with malocclusion etiology.

Certain types of malocclusion are now shown to be associated with Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)/Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and often other associated systemic illnesses related to childhood obesity and/or impaired neurological development in children of all ages. Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (p-OSA) is a breathing disorder that has only recently been shown to negatively impact brain development in children. The disorder is positively linked to increasing prevalence of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) and other disruptive childhood behaviors; and, p-OSA is also now known to be closely associated with a child's inability to consistently sleep and breathe properly during infancy and/or early childhood. Healthy sleep was also likely vital to the survival and reproductive fitness of our ancestors in much the same manner as regular physical activity and ancestral-type feeding regimens were.

Conclusions
Highly prevalent malocclusion is a common finding among children raised in industrialized societies; malocclusion is a rare finding in the pre-Industrial skeletal and fossil records. Many children diagnosed with SDB/OSA have also been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and/or malocclusion. Changed dietary regimens and feeding behaviors during infancy/early childhood seem to have played a role in the observed increased prevalence of malocclusion since the Industrial Revolution. We suggest that ancestral-type IEC feeding regimens are essential for optimum development of the jaws, teeth, face and airway, thus, such regimens also seem to provide protection against development of p-OSA, ADD/ADHD, and childhood obesity.
An argument will be developed in this presentation to support the author’s hypothesis (currently being investigated in Chicago at Northeastern Illinois University, Dept. Anthropology and Lurie Children’s Hospital) that ancestral regimens of IECF confer significant health advantages to children when compared to modern IECF regimen, and that this is best explained by the ability of the former to confer a foundation for a lifetime of optimal rest oral tongue posture and associated nasal breathing….especially during sleep.

Ontogenesis, Occlusion, Motor Patterns: A Whole Body Perspective to Breastfeeding, Mat Boule, DO, Posturologist:
This workshop is intended for lactation consultants interested in thinking outside of the mouth as they explore the links between ontogenesis and breastfeeding for optimal neuro motor development. Sensori motor development in humans in divided into 4 stages between the ages of 0-1 year of age. The senses feed movement and the mouth is located between the two main body parts that contribute to this development: the feet and the eyes.

"Wonderful information - well put together, definitely want to listen to the recording again! "

Hilary Jacobson, is a certified Swiss holistic lactation consultant and author of "Mother Food: A breastfeeding diet guide with lactogenic foods and herbs." Jacobson is a founding member of the non-profit MOBI Motherhood Intl, an online resource for mothers facing extreme breastfeeding challenges, especially low milk supply. She says that she researched "Mother Food" when she experienced persistent and severe low milk supply with each of her four children. "When I saw how 'lactogenic' foods and herbs helped me make more milk I began to study mother-food traditions from around the world.
Women have always been aware of foods that help them breastfeed, and these same foods were the preferred diet in the postpartum. "The more I learned, the more strongly I felt about creating a resource that would encapsulate and preserve our mother-food heritage. Once passed down from mother to daughter, now this knowledge was in danger of being lost."
Today, Hilary Jacobson lives in Oregon where she works as a writer, speaker, and nutritional mentor for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

The Role of Bodywork in the Treatment of the Breastfed Baby, Including Treatment as Part of an Integrative Approach to Support the Tongue-tied Baby:
In this session, Sharon Vallone, a pediatric chiropractor specializing in neuromusculosketal issues that interfere with breastfeeding will assist us in learning the language of the bodyworker as well as present the lens by which a thorough biomechanical assessment is made. She will address the relationship between structure and function in the breastfeeding dyad, supporting the attendee in learning to make appropriate lactation assessments and referrals. Dr Vallone will utilize case presentations that outline specific biomechanical issues and address neonatal compensations associated with impaired function, paying special attention to the tongue-tied baby. This session will also offer some instruction to empower parents to support their infant’s progress.

...'brilliant' - I was left rather speechless. Beautifully presented talk that realising how little I know about anatomy and function. The videos and accompanying commentary were illuminating and easy to follow. The comments on listening to the baby's cry and distinguishing between terror and the baby talking, were really interesting, and could be applied to other situations as well.

COMMENTS FOR ATTENDEES:

"16 pages of notes. And I should have taken more!"

"Overflowing with both information and practical application, this workshop manages to pull together the macrocosm and the microcosm - the global significance of what's going on with our environment and culture, and how it is reflected in the breastfeeding dyad. This presentation is packed with one revelation after the other. Jennifer's material is profound, insightful, and accessible; any time you are able to spend with this brilliant thinker is worth liquid gold. If every lactation consultant were able to take this workshop, we would truly be on our way to transforming the world through our profession."

"Just want everyone to know about this! Thank you both for presenting."

"This subject needs to be part of pediatric training curriculum as well as IBCLC's!"

"Great info, not easily found or heard about!"

"Joy is a pioneer in the modern era of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. She is an eagle eye for the evolutionary and anthropological changes that have occurred in her career. Please take advantage of her wealth of knowledge and her deep experiences."

"I had no idea how synergistically fat soluble vitamins functioned. Fascinating. I always glean information from your webinars, Jennifer, that I not only can use with my clients, but also with my family. Thank you."

"Kevin's lecture was worth the whole fee. Ben's lecture was worth the whole fee."

"Wonderful information - well put together, definitely want to listen to the recording again! "

"Thank you Dr. Ben Lynch! You are A True trailblazer who is keeping up with the evolutionary curve. The information in this presentation is invaluable on so many levels."

"..'brilliant' - I was left rather speechless. Beautifully presented talk that realising how little I know about anatomy and function. The videos and accompanying commentary were illuminating and easy to follow. The comments on listening to the baby's cry and distinguishing between terror and the baby talking, were really interesting, and could be applied to other situations as well."

Emerging Topics in Lactation: Theory into Practice, a 6-Week Webinar Series

I have been invited by Midwife Jennifer Rush of Circle of Life in VT, USA to offer a 6-week WEBINAR series for midwives and midwifery students (although all of the webinars were originally presented to IBCLCs and other breastfeeding supporters, physicians, doctors and birth supporters) entitled Emerging Topics in Lactation: Theory into Practice. I have provided them a group rate and am offering you the opportunity to be included. The series begins Friday May 2nd 4-10pm EST and runs each Friday thereafter for 6 weeks (ALL WEBINARS ARE AVAILABLE RECORDED FOR VIEWING AS WELL).
I have put together some of my presentations along with some brilliant presentations I have hosted from numerous other speakers. The series merges compelling new ideas in epigenetics, nutrition, the microbiome, structure and function and airway with practical applications to support the breastfeeding dyad. These webinars tap some of the most innovative thinkers from the fields of lactation, anthropology, nutrigenomics, posturology, airway dentistry, chiropractic and more to present compelling new concepts, science and research that deepens our understanding of the physiology, neurology and biochemistry of the breastfeeding relationship. The first key message is the role that birth and breastfeeding supporters have in protecting the physiologic norm through knowledge, advocacy, excellent basic skills and a thorough understanding of appropriate referral guidelines and resources. The second is that we are vastly underselling breastfeeding in that we have, to date, failed to comprehend its true imperative. When viewed though this new lens, breastfeeding's primacy becomes clear an compelling.

This course is for anyone who works with babies, birthing families or who wants to expand their knowledge base on emerging health topics. The group rate offers 35.5 hours of lectures for only $600 when paid in full by April 19, 2014. Payment plans are also available. You will not get this spectrum of in-depth, cutting edge information anywhere else. We will also have Skype Q&As with Jennifer Tow to address each of the webinar threads: epigenetics & nutrition, structure & function and clinical skills.

 Some comments from attendees:
"This series has done so much to help me expand my understanding of the many things that can impact lactation and the breastfeeding dyad. I hope more and more lactation professionals and pediatric medical providers will embrace holistic education as it relates to breastfeeding. This course has been well worth the cost."
