THE PURPOSE OF THIS WORKSHOP is to help parents understand the significance of gut health and healing as the foundation of their child's well-being. Gut physiology and the basics of epigenetics, methylation and gut healing will be discussed. The course is designed to help parents of breastfeeding infants and toddlers take a more educated and holistic approach to addressing problems such as "colic", reflux, allergies, eczema, low milk supply, oversupply, etc.

Many parents find themselves confronted with the reality of infants and young children whose guts have been compromised during pregnancy or birth, infancy or early childhood as a result of the mother's leaky gut, birth interventions, exposure to artificial feeding, medications, allergens and/or environmental toxins. Indications or associated conditions in infancy include "colic", infrequent stooling, fussiness, "reflux" or GERD, high-need behaviours, tongue-tie, allergies, poor growth or failure to thrive, eczema and thrush and often include "behaviour problems" or "picky-eating" in older children. Maternal issues include: history of infertility, PCOS, over or undersupply, depression, chronic infection including plugged ducts or mastitis, allergy, asthma, chronic or frequent infections such as sinus or UTIs, digestive problems, migraines, fatigue, poor sleep, candida, skin conditions and other inflammatory conditions. Strategies to nourish and heal the gut are the focus of this educational webinar.

Tongue Posture: An Evolutionary Perspective, Kevin Boyd, DDS
Abstract:
Archaeological evidence indicates that modern-day humans (Homo sapiens) have been in their present anatomic form (Anatomically Modern Human-AMH) for at least 200,000 + years. Observations from pre-historic skeletal and fossil records reveal that H. sapiens has walked the planet for nearly their entire existence with well-aligned teeth and jaws. Even though soft tissues don’t get preserved within the fossil record, anthropologists can nonetheless, with a reasonable degree of scientific certainty, still infer brain sizes from the cranial volumes of fossilized skulls. So, given that the resting tongue should occupy the palatal vault in much the same manner as how the brain occupies the cranial vault, and, that well-aligned jaws and teeth are a symptom of healthy rest oral posture, it can also be inferred with a similar degree of certainty that AMH’s lived with well-postured tongues for hundreds of thousands of years.

In spite of the fact anthropologists have long reported that human craniofacial volume has been diminishing since the advent of agriculture in the Middle East some 10-12,000 years ago, there is no evidence to suggest that the currently prevalent narrowing of jaws and facial bones, with associated crowding and misalignment of teeth (malocclusion), appeared appreciably in humans until around the early/mid-17th Century. Since the early/mid-18th-Century malocclusion prevalence appears to have greatly increased and accelerated in Western Europe. Furthermore, consistent with these observations, there is very little evidence of malocclusion in contemporary indigenous societies that have little or no exposure to modern Western dietary habits.
A connection appears to exist between the prevalence of malocclusion and dietary feeding behaviors, especially during the first years of life. An ancestral pattern of infant and early childhood feeding (IECF), is typically characterized by exclusive and on-demand breast-feeding for at least 6 months, followed by continued on-demand breast-feeding and weaning (with fresh and minimally-processed foods) period into the 3rd year of life; evidence supports that this is the pattern practiced by AMH’s since their first appearance in the fossil record. The combined efforts of being suckled with breastmilk and chewing firmly textured weaning foods appears to provide protection against human malocclusion. Conversely, Modern IECF regimens typically comprised of cow milk-based commercial infant formulas and weaning with highly processed pureed baby foods, seem to be associated with malocclusion etiology.

Certain types of malocclusion are now shown to be associated with Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)/Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and often other associated systemic illnesses related to childhood obesity and/or impaired neurological development in children of all ages. Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (p-OSA) is a breathing disorder that has only recently been shown to negatively impact brain development in children. The disorder is positively linked to increasing prevalence of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) and other disruptive childhood behaviors; and, p-OSA is also now known to be closely associated with a child's inability to consistently sleep and breathe properly during infancy and/or early childhood. Healthy sleep was also likely vital to the survival and reproductive fitness of our ancestors in much the same manner as regular physical activity and ancestral-type feeding regimens were.

Conclusions
Highly prevalent malocclusion is a common finding among children raised in industrialized societies; malocclusion is a rare finding in the pre-Industrial skeletal and fossil records. Many children diagnosed with SDB/OSA have also been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and/or malocclusion. Changed dietary regimens and feeding behaviors during infancy/early childhood seem to have played a role in the observed increased prevalence of malocclusion since the Industrial Revolution. We suggest that ancestral-type IEC feeding regimens are essential for optimum development of the jaws, teeth, face and airway, thus, such regimens also seem to provide protection against development of p-OSA, ADD/ADHD, and childhood obesity.
An argument will be developed in this presentation to support the author’s hypothesis (currently being investigated in Chicago at Northeastern Illinois University, Dept. Anthropology and Lurie Children’s Hospital) that ancestral regimens of IECF confer significant health advantages to children when compared to modern IECF regimen, and that this is best explained by the ability of the former to confer a foundation for a lifetime of optimal rest oral tongue posture and associated nasal breathing….especially during sleep.

"Kevin's lecture was worth the whole fee. Ben's lecture was worth the whole fee."

Ontogenesis, Occlusion, Motor Patterns: A Whole Body Perspective to Breastfeeding, Mat Boule, DO, Posturologist:
This workshop is intended for lactation consultants interested in thinking outside of the mouth as they explore the links between ontogenesis and breastfeeding for optimal neuro motor development. Sensori motor development in humans in divided into 4 stages between the ages of 0-1 year of age. The senses feed movement and the mouth is located between the two main body parts that contribute to this development: the feet and the eyes.

"Wonderful information - well put together, definitely want to listen to the recording again! "

Hilary Jacobson, is a certified Swiss holistic lactation consultant and author of "Mother Food: A breastfeeding diet guide with lactogenic foods and herbs." Jacobson is a founding member of the non-profit MOBI Motherhood Intl, an online resource for mothers facing extreme breastfeeding challenges, especially low milk supply. She says that she researched "Mother Food" when she experienced persistent and severe low milk supply with each of her four children. "When I saw how 'lactogenic' foods and herbs helped me make more milk I began to study mother-food traditions from around the world.
Women have always been aware of foods that help them breastfeed, and these same foods were the preferred diet in the postpartum. "The more I learned, the more strongly I felt about creating a resource that would encapsulate and preserve our mother-food heritage. Once passed down from mother to daughter, now this knowledge was in danger of being lost."
Today, Hilary Jacobson lives in Oregon where she works as a writer, speaker, and nutritional mentor for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

The Role of Bodywork in the Treatment of the Breastfed Baby, Including Treatment as Part of an Integrative Approach to Support the Tongue-tied Baby:
In this session, Sharon Vallone, a pediatric chiropractor specializing in neuromusculosketal issues that interfere with breastfeeding will assist us in learning the language of the bodyworker as well as present the lens by which a thorough biomechanical assessment is made. She will address the relationship between structure and function in the breastfeeding dyad, supporting the attendee in learning to make appropriate lactation assessments and referrals. Dr Vallone will utilize case presentations that outline specific biomechanical issues and address neonatal compensations associated with impaired function, paying special attention to the tongue-tied baby. This session will also offer some instruction to empower parents to support their infant’s progress.

...'brilliant' - I was left rather speechless. Beautifully presented talk that realising how little I know about anatomy and function. The videos and accompanying commentary were illuminating and easy to follow. The comments on listening to the baby's cry and distinguishing between terror and the baby talking, were really interesting, and could be applied to other situations as well.

Overcoming the Complex Challenges of Breastfeeding a Baby with a Cleft Lip or Palate, Alice Farrow
My talk will begin with a brief overview of the embryology of the cleft, the relative accuracy of cleft diagnosis, some associated 'malformations', syndromes and sequences, the psychological impact of ultrasound diagnosis and how to help parents prepare for the birth and breastfeeding of their cleft affected infant.
Getting breastfeeding off to a good start is absolutely vital to when there is a cleft lip and/or palate. Many babies will be able to breastfeed exclusively at the breast (depending on the entity of the cleft). When there is a delay, or inability to breastfeed, then breast milk expression should be initiated as early as possible, supplying information and education to the breastfeeding parent on the most efficient techniques to do so.
Cleft families face a myriad of difficulties for much of the first year, or year and a half, of the infants life. The parents will be faced with difficult decisions regarding surgery, and their child will undergo one or more surgeries in that time, with accompanying medical visits, further complicating the difficulties of infant feeding and/or milk expression. Low supply issues are frequent - often due to a less than optimal start, misinformation/mismanagement of breastfeeding, stress and anxiety, and difficulty with exclusive pumping.
An overview of pre-surgical orthodontics (if used), surgical techniques, timing and number of surgeries, and post-operative feeding restrictions (if applied), vary enormously from surgeon to surgeon and will all impact breastfeeding differently.
Once the palate have been surgically repaired, there is the possibility that the cleft affected infant, who was not previously breastfeeding fully, may transition from bottle to the breast - this is a delicate time which may require intensive support. Not all babies will go on to breastfeed autonomously and the breastfeeding parent may need counselling over the loss of a much hoped for breastfeeding experience.

Alice Farrow's presentation should be mandatory education for everyone working with babies affected by cleft lip and palate as well as their parents. I really appreciate all the personal insight Alice provides and her attention to obstacles parents might face.

Nutrition for Breastfeeding: Eating for a Healthy and Happy Baby, Paul Jaminet, PhD

Great information - makes me want to research nutrition for pregnancy and beyond even more!

The Impact of Birth on Breastfeeding, Sarah Buckley, MD

"Nothing short of excellent!"

Dr. Sharon Vallone is a graduate of Rutgers University (AB Microbiology 1978) and New York Chiropractic College (1986). She completed her Diplomate in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics in 1996 through Palmer College and received her appointment as Fellow in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics in 2003. Dr. Vallone has a private practice limited to high-risk pregnancies and challenged children in Connecticut and is currently the Chair of the Board of Kentuckiana Children’s Center in Louisville, KY and the Vice Chair of the International Chiropractic Association’s Council Pediatric Council. She is an international speaker, author, and editor of the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics. Sharon brings 25+ years of pediatric chiropractic experience with a primary interest in pregnancy, birth trauma, breastfeeding and problems with infant /toddler neurodevelopment.

Alice Farrow: Seven years ago I was expecting my second child. At a routine sixteen week ultrasound I received the surprising diagnosis of cleft lip and palate. After overcoming the initial shock, I began researching how this would affect breastfeeding. I knew that breastfeeding was unlikely but was stubborn enough to think I could do it anyway! There weren't many resources at the time and the first seven months of my daughter's life would be the most tiring and stressful that I have ever endured. Transitioning her to the breast at seven months (post palate repair) and breastfeeding well into childhood, would make up for all of the early difficulties, but many breastfeeding dyads don't receive enough information and support to enjoy that reward.
Since my own cleft daughter was born I have met a myriad of cleft families, through my work as a peer-counsellor, at cleft conferences, through online parenting groups, and recently through my website - thanks to their experiences and through my own research - I have an increasing awareness of the panorama of problems facing these breastfeeding dyads - only some of them directly related to the cleft. It appears to me that lack of specialised support, especially in the early days, is a big factor in the difficulties of breastfeeding with a cleft lip and palate.
I am an Australian living in Italy and speak both Italian and English. This gives me the chance to speak, and correspond with both parents and cleft surgeons across Europe, the UK, the United States and increasingly other areas of the world. This gives me an insight into the diversity of cleft care internationally, and how this impacts breastfeeding differently from region to region. I keep an eye on developments in national and International standards of cleft team care. My dream is to have IBCLCs recognised as a member of the cleft team so that cleft affected infants will receive continuous breastfeeding support from the moment of diagnosis through to the surgical closure of the cleft and throughout the recovery period.
I am mother to two bilingual (breastfed) children, currently working as a writer, speaker, and volunteer peer counsellor, while also preparing for the IBCLC exam. I have two breastfeeding websites www.cleftlipandpalatebreastfeeding.com and www.languageofinclusion.com

“When we learn a new language, we will always speak it with an accent, but for our children, it will become their native tongue.”– Unknown

Our very popular SELF-CARE & HOME REMEDIES Workshop and Sumati Home Remedy KIT (optional purchase):

In our culture, the concept of well-child care has trained us to rely on doctors to treat the simplest of ailments from coughs and colds, to stomach aches and insect bites. Yet, taking care of our own children – keeping them well and treating them ourselves– can be the most empowering of experiences. Choosing safe and effective remedies is usually quite simple with the proper information. We will discuss simple home remedies to address many of the most common ailments, drawing upon over twenty years of practical experience. Raising children with a holistic approach to well-being instills a confidence and attunement that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

We will be presenting it as a two part lecture over two days: October 19 and 26, 2013 from 2pm-5pm EST. Please plan to attend if possible so as to have your questions answered, but the webinars will be taped and available for two weeks after the presentation for pre-registrants.

    2 Days: October19 and 26, 2013 2pm-5pmEST

    Comments from previous presentations:

“The series was more helpful and informative than many of the ‘Holistic’ health books I’ve purchased over the years, and I do think what I learned was well-worth the time and expense. I recommend this series wholeheartedly, and feel anyone who is motivated to find alternative paths to wellness, or has many questions about the path they’ve already begun will find more than their money’s worth in this series."

"absolutely love these ladies! brilliant, thought provoking, knowledgeable, practical. I could listen to them for hours."

"Excellent course, great information and great presenters. You make learning this fun b/c your passion for holistic medicine truly shines. I feel empowered and energized every time I learn more about cell salts, flowers and homeopathy... still a long road but feeling more comfortable. thank you for that!"

"Jen's Sumati kit is an excellent and empowering collection of products and her class teaches one how to use them. There is nothing like making the salve to put on a cut or burn, providing relief for an upset stomach, or helping one find allusive sleep. It was an excellent investment that has more than paid for itself."

"Useful, practical, clear. I love the conversational tone as Elisabeth & Jennifer present and chat together."

"Jen also introduced me to wonderful alternative practitioners who have been vital to our health. The holistic first aid kit I purchased from her is used constantly and my family has been amazed at what we've accomplished with alternative medicine. I've only scratched the surface of all there is to learn but with Jennifer and the network of women she has set up, I am inspired to learn more all the time. "

"I recently purchased Jen's Home Remedy Kit and took her intensive course on the use of the remedies. It has been absolutely life-changing! I use it on literally a daily basis-- for cuts and scrapes, bug bites, illnesses, stomach-aches, teething, everything imagineable! Even my medicine-loving husband swears by our kit and raves about it to anyone who will listen. "

“…The kit has empowered me; I feel confident that I can care for my family’s health and well-being using this arsenal of knowledge Jen has given me. Before I had the kit, when my children were sick I would feel helpless to ease their symptoms and help their bodies heal, but now I have tools at my fingertips to help them to feel better and recover quickly. I highly recommend this kit, and I highly recommend Jennifer”

    CELL SALTS:
Please join us for our first webinar on Schuessler’s Cell Salts. We will be presenting it as a two part lecture over two days: November 2 and 9, 2013 from 2pm-5pm EST.

Cell Salts or Tissue Salts belong to a branch of Homeopathic Medicine known as Biochemistry. The system is a bridge between homeopathy and nutrition. It was developed in the late 19th century by Dr Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler. The 12 salts provide the basic building blocks for all cells in the human body. When they are out of balance, sickness can arise. Utilizing the 12 salts as tools we can bring the body back into balance and correct any deficiences/excesses that exist. The cell salts help our bodies maintain the homeostasis that is essential for our well-being.

In this course we will go over each salt individually and obtain an understanding of all 12--when to use them, how to use them and why you would choose one over another. We will also go over ailments specific to families, including prenatal care, birth, breastfeeding, teething, colds etc. This is a system that is used world wide and one of the first that families should acquaint themselves with. Unlike homeopathy which utilizes thousands of remedies and can be overwhelming, there are only 12 salts to learn. The webinar will deepen your understanding of each, allowing you to confidently use them to manage your family’s care.

Please plan to attend if possible so as to have your questions answered, but the webinars will be taped and available for two weeks after the presentation for pre-registrants ONLY.

    BACH FLOWERS:
Please join us for a webinar on the flower essence system developed by Edward Bach in the 1930’s. Bach was a well respected medical doctor, who was also a homeopath, a bacteriologist and an immunologist. Through his work he realized that true healing required harmony in the soul and eventually left his work in pursuit of a more elegant system.

Flower essences are an energetic medicine that works primarily on the emotions. Bach felt that disharmony in the body could be traced back to imbalances in the mind, that it was a conflict between the soul and the person’s outlook that allowed people to be vulnerable to illness. He made it his life’s work to find flowers to address any possible emotion in it’s negative aspect, which would prevent the body from expressing the imbalance. Though they are primarily considered to act on the mind, working with them clinically it has made it quite clear that using the flowers appropriately it is possible to make an impact physically as well.

We will be covering each of the 38 flower essences individually, as well as learning about the best known combination: rescue remedy which is also known as five flower formula. After the course you will be able to identify all 38, understand the differences between them and gain insight as to how they differ from one another.

Flowers are perhaps the most gentle of all our remedies. They can be used orally, topically or environmentally for adults, children, infants and pets. Some have even used them successfully in gardening. It is an extremely intuitive system that we have delighted in sharing with our clients for many years. It is our hope that you will join us in our respect and affection for this system.

The course will be held in three parts, January 4, 11, 18, 2014 from 2-5pm EST.

She then the studied under the direction of Grant Bentley at the Victorian College of Classical Homeopathy to learn homeopathic facial analysis which has allowed her to gain a deeper understanding and practical application of homeopathic medicine. In pursuit of her love of flower essences as a healing modality she trained directly under Rhonda Pallas Downey and was certified in the Living Flower Essence range. She also trained with David Dalton at Delta Gardens to learn the Teasel flower essence protocol which has enabled her to bring relief to many people living with Lyme disease. They have provided the space for her to access her intuition and internal guidance more fully, which is something that she is passionate about teaching. She lives, practices and teaches out of Connecticut. She also runs a private training facility in partnership with her husband.

Elisabeth uses a variety of techniques to assist her clients on their journey of personal transformation. Synthesizing her knowledge of homeopathic medicine, flower essences, biochemic therapies, homotoxicology, and nutrition she find ways to support her clients in ways that makes sense to them within the context of their lives.

The Sumati Home Remedy KIT was co-developed and the project co-owned with Lynn Ofori.

Posted on Facebook by a momma who took the last series of webinars

I'm finally getting through the Raising Children Holistically backlog of webinars (3 down and 4 still to go) and it is redefining everything for me about being a mother! Jennifer the information you and Elisabeth provide in these webinars is so beyond anything that the world my brain used to inhabit could ever teach me about caring for my child; if I were to figure this out on my own time it would surely take me decades and many mistakes. It's like since I've met you, you have pulled me out of the allopathic world and shaken my brain free and made me realise that I can use it in a better way and TRUST my intuition. Giving a mother the gift of being able to tap into her intuition and trust it and not dismiss it as paranoia is one of the most amazing gifts I have ever, EVER received! And additionally by you giving us all these practical tips on how to use homeopathy, Bach flowers, and food to become and remain healthy, it just makes that intuition so easy to apply to heal our families faster. Wow, I'm continually blown away by all I am learning since meeting you, and my family and I are forever grateful! I don't care if this is me plugging your webinar series (or your gut healing webinar that got me started on this path) as that is my way of helping other mothers in this group, by letting them know about this series of webinars and that it is absolutely something they should do if they can get together the money - it is an investment in your family's future. With the knowledge I have gained from this series, today alone I have turned my toddler from a little teething monster back into her fun self who is now playing with my husband who was in bed all morning with a virus until I figured out the right remedy to help him - I can hear both of them downstairs now playing and giggling and I can truly say my heart is bursting with happiness that I have this knowledge at my fingertips which allows me to heal my family in this way and avoid painkillers and antibiotics and co.! Wow! THANK YOU
